OQ Facilities Development Company LLC (a fully-owned entity of Oman Gas Company, which in turn is fully-owned by OQ formed a joint venture with LGI, to establish Musandam Power Company.

The Plant is adjacent to the Musandam Gas Plant on a coastal site near the Musandam/Ras Al Khaimah (RAK, UAE) border crossing approximately 500 km from Muscat in Oman. The Plant comprises of 15 Wartsila 34DF dual-fuel Reciprocating Engines (RE) running primarily on gas but capable of switching to Fuel Oil if necessary. Unlike other power plants in Oman which are based on gas turbines, the Plant is based on reciprocating engine technology. The Plant is designed to comply in all respects with all applicable environmental regulators.

The company was founded by OQ – which owns 69.9%, OETCL – which owns 0.1%, and LGI – which owns 30%. With a contracted power capacity of 120 MW, it currently contributes a significant proportion of Oman’s total MIS capacity. The power produced from the Plant is fully contracted to OPWP (Oman Power & Water Procurement Co.), pursuant to a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), and used to meet the growing power demand of the Musandam Governorate.

The Plant with installed capacity of c. 120 MW is the only permanent power plant using natural gas as primary fuel servicing the electricity demand of the Musandam Governorate. The demand is expected to be driven by future developments aimed to boost touristic, economic, and commercial activities. The Plant being the only permanent power plant in Musandam is expected to meet the demand in the region.
